Bootcamp in Metals and Fire - Southeast Federation Mineralogical Society (SFMS)

Boot Camp in Metals and Fire – Linda Searcy

Wildacres, near Little Switzerland, NC – August 21-27, 2017 Registions: http://sfmsworkshops.com/

This week long workshop will focus on essential jewelry fabrication techniques and is a great place to jump start the absolute beginner metalsmith. Using silver and copper, we will cover sawing, soldering, filing, texturing, and much more. We will fabricate rings and pendants – create simple bezels to set stone cabochons. Ring and pendant blanks will created with the hydraulic press and pancake dies. Hand held butane torches will be used to solder pieces together. If time permits, we will cover tube setting small faceted gemstones.

Instructor will have limited hand tools and larger equipment (flex shaft, large torch, press) to share. Students are encouraged to bring own personal hand tools: saw frame, hand files, hand pliers (wire nippers, round nose, flat nose), small ball pein hammer, etc. Feel free to bring your power dremel (not battery type) and accessory bits if you have them.

Lab / material fee ($185) will include sufficient wire and sheet metal (fine silver, sterling silver, copper) to make several pieces, stone cabochons, faceted gemstones, and consumable supplies (torch fuel, flux, solder, pickle, sand paper). Additional metal, stone cabochons and gemstones will be available for purchase.

Feel free to send email if you have questions – LJS0928@gmail.com

Maximum number of students: 6

***** NOTE: I will be teaching Judy Peppers class *****

Wire, fire, daps, punches, hammers and soldering - all in one class. Learn a variety of techniques, clasps, closures, bead caps, ear wires and other components to use in your jewelry designs. Finish your pieces with components you have made rather than purchased. This is a design class and will include some finished pieces, not just parts. This is a fast-paced, fun class sure to enhance skills you already know, or want to learn, without the pressure of trying to keep up or produce. This class is a learning experience in a noncompetitive exploration of metal. Silver, and copper will be used; bring your own or purchase from the instructor. Lab fee includes everything needed for making all items in copper. Silver will be available for purchase at market prices.
