From geology.com:

Fire Opal is a term used for colorful, transparent to translucent opal, with a base color that is a fire-like hue from yellow to orange to red. These colors are thought to be caused by the presence of small amounts of iron in the opal. The value of a fire opal is based upon the desirability and uniformity of its color, with yellow being on the low end of value and red being on the high end. Transparent stones are preferred over translucent stones.

NOTE: Fire opal is very sensitive to extreme heat, to acids, alkaline solutions and to sharp objects. Like all opals, it should not be exposed to intense light over long periods. However, it loves to be worn a lot, since this enables it to maintain its water balance, using the moisture of the wearer's skin and that of the air.
